Older people’s experience with scams and fraud

The Need

As part of their Scams Prevention programme funded by Lloyds Banking Group, Age UK wanted to conduct large scale national polling to understand the impact of scams and fraud on older people.

Our Approach

Opinium conducted a nationally representative survey with 10,000 older people in Great Britain to understand their experiences of scams and fraud and the impact this has had. An ethnic minority boost was also included to ensure results were as representative as possible.

The Outcome

The research has been used as part of an evaluation of the Scams Prevention programme and to drive continuous improvement of the programme and the ways it can support victims as well as working to prevent scams and fraud. The results have also been used to keep the issue on the national agenda, including an open letter to the Payment Systems Regulator in collaboration with Which?, Victim Support, and the National Trading Standards Scams Team.
