Half of Londoners fear unrest at the Notting Hill Carnival
- Over half (53%) of Londoners believe there will be further disturbances during Carnival
- Three quarters (77%) of Londoners support the earlier start and finishing times of the carnival, but 44% don?t think these measure will prevent further disturbances
- Just under one quarter (24%) of Londoners believe Carnival should have been cancelled
In light of the recent civil unrest, over half (53 per cent) of Londoners believe further disturbances are likely to take place during the festival, with (24 per cent) actually calling for the Carnival to be cancelled. However, the majority of Londoners (57%) still support the tradition, and think that the Carnival should go ahead regardless of potential disruptions.
The riots have made the organisers of the festival aware of potential trouble so they have implemented earlier start and finishing times in a bid to create a safer environment ? a move supported by three quarters (77 per cent) of attendees. However, while the timing of Notting Hill Carnival is one step towards trying to protect the public from further riots, 44 per cent of Londoners don?t think these measures go far enough to prevent civil unrest.
Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 2,041 UK adults aged 18+ from 19th to 22nd August 2011 of which 253 live in London. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria.
