The Growth of Formula 1 in America
Formula 1’s presence in America has increased significantly since being acquired by US-based Liberty Media in early 2017, with the introduction of new races in both Miami and Las Vegas to add to the existing Grand Prix hosted in Austin for the past decade.
Shortly before the start of the 2023 Formula 1 season, we ran a project looking at the following of Formula 1 in the US, the number of new followers the sport has gained in recent years, and the impact the Netflix Series Drive to Survive has had in driving a new generation of fans to the sport.
The study also looked at attitudes towards the sport on-track in light of major regulation changes in 2022 designed to improve racing, and the introduction of sprint races at select events since the 2021 season.
Finally, we assessed the impact of the sport off-track, focusing on attitudes towards Formula 1 from an environmental and social perspective, as well as the role that Formula 1 is expected to play as a platform for social change.
