Tackling the gender ‘pedal gap’
In 2022 the government revealed that men are three times more likely to take a bike ride than women. Our report, in partnership with Lime, sets out to uncover the full picture of this gender disparity and analyse what is causing the difference in attitudes towards cycling.
The results reveal the barriers women face to cycling, in particular regarding travelling alone at night time, as well as identifying clear solutions to tackle the gender ‘pedal gap’ and help make cycling safer and more accessible. For example, we reveal how 9 out of 10 (91%) female cyclists face barriers to cycling, which result in a negative experience for some women. Furthermore, over a quarter (27%) believe they lack the confidence needed to have a safe cycling experience.
