The media like Fahrenheit but most Brits think in Celsius

Just 21% think mainly in Fahrenheit with 24% using both Celsius and Fahrenheit when they think of temperature.

In fact when we look at various age groups, Celsius is used by 82% of those in their 20s, 74% of those in their 30s and 49% of those in their 40s. Only the 60+ age group had more people comfortable with Fahrenheit than Celsius.

With other units of measurement though, imperial is still the standard with 81% thinking in miles rather than kilometres, 81% using feet and inches for human height rather than metres and centimetres and 73% using pounds and stones for human weight rather than kilograms.

Opinium Research carried out an online survey of 2,001 GB adults aged 18+ from 19th – 22nd July 2013. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria.

Interview Method and Sample

This survey is conducted online by CAWI (computer aided web interviewing), using Opinium?s online research panel of circa 30,000 individuals. This research is run from a representative sample of GB adults (aged 18+ in England, Scotland and Wales). The sample is defined from pre-collected registration data containing gender, age (18-34, 35-54, and 55+), region (North East, North West, Yorkshire and Humberside, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, South East, South West, Wales, and Scotland), working status and social grade to match the latest published ONS figures.

Opinium also takes into account differential response rates from the different demographic groups, to ensure the sample is representative.
