The currency of convenience: 80 per cent of 85–95-year-olds now pay with contactless

In Opinium’s recent study in partnership with Barclays, we highlight the growing popularity of contactless payments in the UK, with record-breaking usage in 2023. Our survey discovered that older demographics are increasingly embracing contactless payments, with over-65s showing the fastest growth for the third consecutive year. Additionally, mobile wallet payments are gaining traction among younger consumers, with 22% of 18-34-year-olds regularly leaving their wallets behind in favour of paying with their smartphones.
