Labour end the year 8 points ahead as Boris Johnson’s approval rating remains negative
Labour are on 39% (-1) in our final poll of 2021 while the Conservatives remain at 32%. The Lib Dems are on 11%, their highest share of the vote in an Opinium poll since the 2019 election.

Boris Johnson’s approval rating is -31%, slightly better than his -35% two weeks ago but still comfortably among the worst we have recorded for him since he became prime minister.

Keir Starmer re-enters positive territory with 35% approving and 31% disapproving. The Labour leader’s ratings have steadily recovered since October after becoming sharply negative in May this year.

Starmer also leads for the second poll in a row on our ‘best prime minister’ question, albeit with both main party leaders having lower percentages than the last time Starmer led on this question, in June 2020.

Government approval on their handling of the pandemic remains negative, albeit slightly less so than in the last poll:
