Renters left with unresolved problems
Although the vast majority of homeowners (88%) are satisfied with where they live, only two thirds (66%) of private renters said they were satisfied with the property they live in, with one in six (17%) saying they are dissatisfied. In fact, when it comes to where they live, only private renters’ satisfaction with the transport links of the property came near to that of homeowners (70% vs 75% respectively), while satisfaction with the local community was noticeably less (67% vs 78%).Problems with the propertyPrivate renters are also more likely to have problems with their property. In the past year, 63% of private renters have had problems with their property, compared to half (50%) of homeowners.A third (32%) have had problems with damp or mold in the past 12 months, twice the proportion of homeowners that say the same thing (15%). A fifth (21%) of private renters had problems with their plumbing and a further 19% have had problems with worn out decorations. While they are more likely to experience problems with where they live, they are also less likely to have these issues resolved.
